Who, What, When, Where and Why is Sugar Land Press?
A book is a book is a book they say. The line between Self Publishing and Traditional Publishing continues to become blurred. Traditional Publishers produce bound books. Self publishers produce bound books. The “Print on Demand” process produces a bound book that cannot be distinguished from a traditionally published book. Traditional publishers use Kindle to digitize and sell their books on Amazon. So do self publishers.
20 years ago, Independent or Self Publishing a book consisted of taking your 100 page manuscript down to the local office supply and running 100 black and white copies. Your cover options were limited. You could either use a 3 hole punch and put the sheets in a 3 ring binder, or you could splurge and have the office supply store put one of those black plastic spiral binders on the side. Either way, your “Self Published” book looked, well… self published.
Not so today.
Newsweek Magazine recently ran an article that said the stigma on self publishing has vanished. E-books are available all over the internet and Kindle has led the way in offering digitized, downloadable books that you purchase and instantly download to an electronic reader. Even well known, established authors are taking advantage of the easy availability of the process, and have started publishing their own books. Why?
Two reasons really:
Digital books are available for instant download. An author can upload their digital, formatted and edited book to a bookseller like Kindle, and within 3 days, they are a published author, at least in the digital universe.
Print on demand allows an author to upload a manuscript, and within a week or two, have a hard copy of the book delivered to their front door. Self publishing has become easier and traditional publishing has become more difficult.
What is the difference financially?
Established Authors that have a publisher, and have written and sold several books over the years can usually command a top payment of 15% royalty. This means that if you book has a cover price of $20.00, you will get $3.00 for every book sold. New authors will get 5% royalty or less. a 5% royalty means that for every $20 book you sell, you get $1.00.
Self Publishers on the other hand, can have their books published and bound by a self publishing company for around $10, more or less. The same $20 cover price will net the established or rookie author a 50% royalty or $10 for every book sold. You can buy the books at your cost from the publisher, and you can buy 1, 10, 20 or 1,000 if you want. Your choice.
So as you can see, you can’t judge a book by just looking at the cover, but there is a vast difference in everything else.
