Barnes & Noble Nook Color

Sony Reader Touch Edition

Sony Reader Daily Edition

Alex e-reader

Pandigital Novel

Kobo eReader

The Sharper Image Literati

Take your pick. They all have advantages and disadvantages but the all do basically the same thing – they allow you to read a book that has been digitized on a small, electronic, hand held device.

The advantages are numerous:

Digital books cost less than a bound book

You can store hundreds of digital books on 1 eReader

Not using paper to print a book is environmentally friendly

Embedded Text to Speech Software allows the book to be read aloud by the eReader

eReader screens are back lit, allowing the book to be read in the dark

eReaders are smaller and lighter than a stack of bound books

If you are into the latest electronic gadget, the eReader is for you

The font size can be made larger or smaller to suit your eyes

You can purchase and instantly download a digital book from your computer, smart phone, and on most eReaders

But there are disadvantages:

Not all digital book readers will read all formats of digital books

Your battery must be recharged periodically

If you loose your eReader, you loose your books unless you have them backed up elsewhere

eReaders can be expensive, but as you purchase more, less expensive digital books, you will save money

Low Screen Resolution may be a problem with some eReaders causing headaches and tired eyes

Easy piracy of digital books may be a problem for authors

The materials the eReader is made of may not be recyclable, especially the batteries

Not all books are available in digital format

Your digital reader tracks your reading habits, which raises some privacy concerns

But whether you like them or not, you only have to look around and see the book stores that are closing their doors, to figure out where print books and digital format books are headed. In a few years, printed books will still be sold, but digital books will outsell them 100 to 1. Digital books are doing to print publishing what NetFlix and RedBox has done to BlockBuster.
